The arrival of September heralds the start of the Society's busiest period with 19 scheduled fixtures in September and October. All in all, there were 8 matches across the country, from Durham to Sussex, involving 50 members (and one or two guests!)
We began the month in glorious weather at Purdis Heath, the home of Ipswich Golf Club. Despite the absence of Match Manager, Richard Baker, the team pulled off a fantastic victory over 27 holes of 4BBB (18) and Greensomes (9). The course was, as always, magnificent, the food delicious and above all the welcome received from our hosts, exceptional. The members who played were Guy McDonnell, Chris Goldie, Tim Wren, Kevin Brooks, John Childs, Jon Hardy, Bill Merry, Graham Napier, Adrian Pierson, Roy Dexter, Steve Plumb and Tim Smith.
Next stop was also in the East, this time the delightful Royal Worlington and Newmarket Golf Club, "the sacred nine" as described by Bernard Darwin. A Society team with a couple of guests had a great day at this magnificent course, enjoying a very warm welcome and some great competition over the day. The result was a narrow win (by 1 point) to the hosts. The following Society members played : Bill Merry, Bryan Richardson, Roy Dexter, Tim Wren, Guy McDonnell, and Mike Selvey.
County Durham saw our next two fixtures run by the former Northants (but proud sons of the North-East) legends, George Sharp and Geoff Cook. The first was at The Wynyard and a fabulous day was had by all on a wonderful course and with the warmest of welcomes.
The match itself was a hard-fought draw (3 all).
The next day, we lost at Ramside 4/2 but once again the warmth of the welcome, the hospitality and the course were are outstanding. Spending two days in Durham was fantastic and we greatly value the opportunity to take the CCGS to county cricket's most northern county.
The following Society members played across the two matches : George Sharp, Geoff Cook, Guy McDonnell, Roy Dexter, Kevin Evans, Steve Malone, Barrie Leadbeater, Neil Hartley, Graham Monkhouse, Simon Brown, Phil Mustard, Mike Roseberry, Trevor Tunnicliffe, Keith Newell and Ashok Patel.
The following Saturday saw the Society return to one of our oldest adversaries, Worplesdon. Match Manager Stuart Waterton reports as follows:
It was with some trepidation that the CCGS, represented by Steven Andrew, Roy Dexter, Melville Guest, Jon Hardy, Chris Hellings, Harry Latchman, Guy McDonnell, Tony Pigott, Malcolm Roberts, Julian Thompson, Stuart Waterton & Tim Wren, gathered at Worplesdon for their annual fixture to contest the Bedser Bowl - the skies were dark & having battled driving rain in the journey to the course the fear was that this, most eagerly anticipated of matches, would be lost to the elements; however, to the astonishment of all the day passed with only two further significant heavy showers allowing the full 36 holes to be played & a great day had by all.
Handily placed at 3 ½ points to 2 ½ points up after the morning round, the CCGS, unusually, failed to reinforce their position in the post lunch session when the host club rallied to win by the same margin - resulting in the Trophy being shared for the second consecutive year.
Our thanks must go to Nigel Kendall (managing the home side for a remarkable 50th year), the Worplesdon Members & the Club for their magnificent hospitality.
September finished with an excellent day, as always, at Ashridge. Whilst unable to play himself, Society Secretary and former Ashridge member, had brought together an excellent team of 8. The matches were close fought but the honours went to our hosts over 4 matches of 4BBB. A superb lunch followed and a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. The following members played : Guy McDonnell, Chris Goldie, Tim Robinson, Bill Merry, Andy Needham, Simon Robinson, Harry Latchman and Jon Hardy.
